A recent Smart Assistive Technology Installation case study
Recently I was invited by LifeTec Australia to design a Smart Assistive Technology system for a client of theirs.
LifeTec Australia’s occupational therapists had been working with this client for several months in determining what SAT would be best suited for their needs and how it could be implemented to ensure the client got the most out of any SAT.
When I met the client for the first time he was clearly excited that his dreams of being able to have SAT installed was closer to becoming a reality. We discussed the interfaces that were available and he made the choice to use hard button remote controls and utilise his existing smart phone and smart tablet. He is an android lover and joked “I am happy with anything as long as it isn’t apple”.
I then inspected his department of housing townhouse to work out the best way to get this project completed. The challenge of department of housing is that everything has to be able to be removed with little or no permanent damage to the property.
The Smart Assistive Technology installed:
- Lighting Control (all lights internal & external)
- Ceiling Fan Control
- Heating & Cooling Control
- Audio/Visual Control (2x TV’s, 2x Foxtel STB, 2x Blu-ray Players)
- Sonos Integration (1x Playbar)
Smart Assistive Technology Features:
- Local & Remote control of system via smart phone or tablet
- Assistance and emergency quick buttons on remotes and smart devices that will send alerts to carers if required
- Quick and easy to use interfaces that allow control of lights & AV from a single remote or smart device
- Lighting scenes for quick recall of preset lighting modes
- Good night button that shuts everything off with a single press
- On screen display for visual alerts for daily reminders.
The installation was completed in just a day with 2 of our skilled installation teams and an external electrical contractor for the electrical works.
“It’s great that I can get up in the middle of the night and have the lights on throughout my house before I leave the room, and then when I return to my room I can turn the lights off once I get back into bed.”
As part of our ongoing commitment to our clients I followed up to see how everything was going and I got a very short reply.
“I feel like a king”
I can’t be happier with his response. It shows that we have delivered on our promise of making him more independent, feel safer and more secure in his own home.
